Steel - the most sustainable material among three popular roofing materials.
According to a life-cycle analysis on sustainability, high-quality steel roofs offer advantages for the climate compared to other roof types.
The study, carried out by WSA (World Steel Association), concluded that the steel roofs tested (high-quality steel roofs, with long lifespan) had the lowest overall effect on the climate – up to 60% less than other roof types.
The study covered climate effects from:
- construction of the roof, including packaging materials,
- maintenance, and
- end-of-life, meaning recycling, reuse, incineration, and disposal to landfill.
High-quality steel roofs are more climate-friendly mainly due to the end-of-life benefits – primarily recycling advantages and the low need for maintenance. Steel roofs can be reused and recycled, up to almost 100%.
